“Mumbai as a tech hub has been thriving and we are making sure the world knows about it,” Jain said. “TEAM will play a key role in contributing towards India’s Techade and our hon’ble PM’s vision of a $1-trillion tech ecosystem. It is an honour to co-chair this organisation and work closely with the government and industry to keep growing Mumbai’s tech ecosystem exponentially.”

Formed in October 2022, TEAM comprises 46 founders from Mumbai-based tech companies including BillDesk, BookMyShow, CitiusTech, Dream11, Eruditus, Fino, Games 24×7, Haptik, Hungama, Nazara Technologies, Pepperfry, PharmEasy, Pine Labs, Purplle, Route Mobile, Shaadi.com, Upstox, and Zepto, among others.

“The first year of TEAM was simply putting Mumbai tech on the map. It was about galvanising the existing community of unicorn and soonicorn founders,” Vaish said. “Now that the foundation is in place, the next two years are going to be all about grassroot development. We want every young founder and engineer to start thinking of Mumbai as one of their top choices to build a startup.”

TEAM recently conducted its flagship event ‘Mumbai Tech Week’ that brought together Mumbai’s tech community, including over 4,000 tech enthusiasts and high-profile speakers from the government and tech world.

During the event, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis unveiled ‘Mumbai Megapolis Metaverse’, aimed at showcasing ongoing infrastructure developments in Mumbai through a virtual representation of the city in the metaverse, envisioning the transformation of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) by 2025.

According to Tracxn, Maharashtra’s tech startup ecosystem has received $30 billion in funding up to February 2024, placing it second only to Karnataka. In 2023, the Maharashtra tech sector saw four funding rounds exceeding $100 million, a notable drop from the 13 witnessed in 2022 as the funding winter cooled investor activity.
